Matsumoto

She came to a horrifying realization that she was in a deeper shit than she initially thought. Her bestfriend’s eyes widened at her silence, confirming what was written all over her pretty face.

“Kazu, I –“

“I am not going to help you ruin somebody else’s life, Matsumoto-san,” her bestfriend grumbled angrily, fiery eyes meeting hers in a way that made her insides tremble. Nino rarely ever got mad, and it was even rarer for his anger to be directed at her but this time, she knew she was the one at fault.

She moved to settle herself on her couch, thinking how things suddenly went from a very happy and touching reunion to something like this. Her bestfriend, who looked like he wanted nothing but to take his ass somewhere far away from her, was frowning in that way that made her want to take whatever it was she had said, or done, for that matter.

“It’s… It’s not like that, okay?” she replied miserably, cradling her face in between her hands in a gesture that she knew always worked to her advantage. She knew her bestfriend enough to know how to melt his anger, and soon enough, she heard Nino drew out an exasperated breath before the other man walked briskly towards her and sat down next to her.

She immediately folded herself against his side, feeling utterly disgusted with herself for simply involving her bestfriend in the trouble she had stupidly put herself into.

“Do you love this man, June-chan?” Nino whispered softly at the same time he shifted to pull her safely inside his arms, and letting his fingers card through the soft strands of her hair as if she was the same little girl he had vowed to protect when they were still children.

She choked on a breath, her senses was suddenly filled with the memories of the man she had agreed to marry, his gentle voice, his kind, understanding eyes, and wondering for the nth time why she allowed herself to be lead on by her passion, and giving herself to a man whose last name she wasn’t even able to ask.

“I…” she paused, shifting to grip the front of her bestfriend’s shirt and tried swallowing the lump that was currently blocking her throat; it’s too hard, and she didn’t know how in hell she’d be able to get on marrying her fiancé when she knew she had done something really terrible. “I did… I do,”

“Make up your mind, June-chan,” he said, squeezing her tight and kissing her temple lightly. “it’s important that you know the difference between now and before, because it’s clear that you don’t love this guy you’re marrying as much as you think you do,”

She choked again, shutting her eyes closed at the memory of that drunken night out with the man she could barely remember, and the way she simply let her inhibitions go as she rode the waves of her passion without even thinking about the consequences of her actions.

“I don’t even know if I… I’m not sure if I could do this, but at the same time, I don’t want to hurt him by –“

He chuckled, squeezing her again as if giving her the strength he knew she needed. “You’re going to end up hurting him either way, June-chan…”

Her bestfriend sighed through her hair and pulled her tighter, rocking them sideways when he felt her tremble as tears escaped her eyes even as she tried stopping them.

“You don’t have to pretend with me, June-chan,” Nino murmured tenderly, hushing softly when she muffled her cries against his chest. “Let him go while you still can… while there’s still time..”

She looked up to face him then, her eyes begging him to understand as she took his hands to hers, shaking as she bit her quivering lips.

“Then help me, Kazu,” she begged, her voice sounding too frantic even in her own ears; her bestfriend’s eyes softened visibly, moving his hand to cup her chin and leaning forward to press an apologetic kiss against her forehead.

“Sorry princess,” she heard him say over the sounds of her own racing heartbeat, “but I don’t think I’d be able to this time,”

June cried.

Ohno

He dared not think about how it probably should have been a lot better if he had listened to his mother instead of going through this when he was having a hard time convincing himself that everything would be as smooth-sailing as he thought things would be, not after realizing how terrible it was to deal with June these past few days.

It didn’t even occur to him how easy it would have been if he had waited, or maybe, if he was smart enough to accept June’s proposal to live together first, then decide afterwards if they loved each other enough not to kill each other in the long run.

But being the stubborn, dumb-headed and old-fashion geek that he was, he refused and spot-on proposed, crushing whatever his unconscious little self was screaming at him at the time.

And now, as he rushed towards the lift that would take him to his fiancée’s flat, he kind of wished he had the power to turn back time and he would happily walk out of her before they even got to discuss the things that were currently the reasons for his unusual headaches.

He stood blinking in front of the lift, punching at the button absently and slipped inside when the door opened with a quiet ding. He punched the number to June’s floor, picking at his nails and munching on his lower lip, entirely oblivious to the fact that he might be looking sorely pathetic with his lips jutting out like that.

He found out he didn’t really care, not at this point anyway.

With a long suffering sigh and at with the elevator door opening at the same time, he stepped out and quietly braced himself as he walked towards his fiancée’s door, breathing in one more time before he lifted his hand and knocked.

“I’m sorry I’m la –“

“Ohchan?! What the hell are you – oh, fuck.”

Ninomiya

Of all the things he couldn’t stand, this certainly topped the list; seeing his bestfriend in tears and knowing that there wasn’t anything he could do but to allow it.

His mother told him once how proud she was that he was son, because he was nothing like his father; a gentle soul (with a smart, little mouth) and gentleman through and through.

He’d scuffed it off, knowing that he was anything but that, and he knew his mother was well aware about the truth as much as he was.

He didn’t think it was necessary to bring it up then, and he was pretty sure he wasn’t going to bring it up either now, not when his bestfriend looked about ready to kill herself if only to make sure she wasn’t going to face this death sentence alone.

He wished things were that simple.

He came here thinking they could be able to catch up, talk about those things they weren’t able to discuss because they were both too busy with their own lives. He missed his bestfriend so much, missed talking to her about everything and anything.

But how were they able to do that now when June was asking him to do something he knew he wasn’t right, and while he was still in the middle of figuring out how he could help her sort this thing out without making it look like he would be helping her hurt the person she had promised to spend her life with.

“June-chan,” he called, squeezing her tight and kissing the top of her head as he felt her shiver against him. “Come on, princess,” he cooed as June sniffled elegantly against his chest, both of them freezing when they both heard a couple of gentle knocks on her door.

“K-Kazu,”

He sighed. “There’s still time to do this right, princess,” he murmured before he released her, swiping her face with the tips of his fingers as she forced herself upright. He stood up and threw her a final glance, nodding at her when she stared right back, looking slightly terrified.

“I’m going to let him in, okay?” he said, reaching down to mess her hair and grinning when she scuffed and pulled away. “I’ll be in the kitchen if you need me. Just scream and I’ll come out right away,” he added teasingly.

She lowered her lashes and forced out a shaky laugh. “Thank you,”

He shook his head and waved his hand to her general direction, before strutting his way towards the front door, wishing she would take his advice and do the right thing.

Another couple of knocks and he quickly reached to unlock the door, almost falling right over the moment his eyes met the other man’s.

 “I’m sorry I’m la –“

His breath caught in his throat, Nino blinked.

“Ohchan?! What the hell are you – oh, fuck.”
