They met one Saturday morning when the sun was up and stupid kids gathered in front of the old swing, shouting at each other while deciding who could go first.

Nino wasn’t someone who loved the outdoors much. In fact, he loathed being out here where it’s buggy and hot and well, had to endure being around stupid kids with stupid habits of playing under the blazing heat of the sun.

He’s not stupid so he only stayed as far away as he could from them, hiding under the old tree a few meters away from the star of that playground -- the old, rusty swing. Nino chuckled under his breath when he saw a little boy, probably a year older than him, walking towards the circle of kids in front of the swing with an ice cream in his hand.

Nino heard warning bells around his head when he saw the boy reached out and poked one of the oldest, and probably the stupidest kid in the bunch, licking on his ice cream. Then without a word, the boy went passed them and went straight to the vacant sit of the swing. The other kids just stared at him, not able to say anything.

Nino immediately sprung to his feet, chuckling. He saw when Ryo-kun advanced and whipped the ice cream off of the boy’s hand, his face flushing red in anger and embarrassment. Nino groaned and half-run towards them, his eyes never leaving the boy’s face.

“Oi!” he shouted when he was a few steps away from them. Ryo-kun and his stupid kid bodyguards turned to look at him quizzically. “Leave him alone, will you?!”

Ryo-kun faced him and Nino almost burst out laughing with the way the boy’s face crumpled in anger. But Nino was confident that the damn kid wouldn’t do something to upset him. The bruise on his left eye was still visible from last week’s brawl and Nino was sure he recognized him, judging the way his mouth quirked nervously.

One of Ryo-kun’s bodyguard, another new kid from their block stepped forward. “And who the hell do you think you are?! You have some nerve telling us off!” he said. Nino narrowed his eyes, clawed his stubby little fingers and snarled under his breath.

He also took a few steps forward and he could very well see Ryo-kun’s expression changing. He smiled devilishly, turning to wink at the puffy-cheeked boy sitting on the swing, who was then staring at him blankly.

“Me?” Nino asked defiantly, lifting his chin in the most dignified way a five-year old kid could do. “.. I am your worst nightmare, so fuck on! I don’t want to see your ugly faces running around in here anymore, or..” he paused, stepping up in front of Ryo and enjoyed the way Ryo-kun shook visibly. He leaned in closer, smiled at the way the other boy’s lips trembled in fear. “.. Ryo-kun here will tell what I will do to you..” he said, turning to face the other boy. He stomped his foot and one by one, the kids pulled, out leaving him and the puffy-cheeked boy behind.

Nino smiled, really proud of himself. He turned and stared at the boy thoughtfully. Nino let out a soft laugh when the boy looked down and pouted when he saw his ice cream melting in the sand. He offered his right hand, smiling encouragingly.

“I’m sorry about your ice cream..” he said. The boy looked back at him, puffing his cheeks adorably. Nino did everything to keep himself from poking the said cheeks. Instead, he smiled some more and offered his hand. “.. by the way, I’m Nino..” he said, introducing himself.

Nino wondered if the boy could actually talk because he just stayed there, shifting his gaze between his hand and Nino’s face, his lips still pouted in a way that’s so sinfully cute that Nino couldn’t help but grin instead of stomping his way out of there.

Nino clicked his tongue, a little impatiently. It’s still hot in there and well, though he wanted to know the boy’s name, it couldn’t be help if he’s mute right? “Well? Do you have a name?” he asked.

The boy stood up and shook Nino’s hand with that dazed look on his face.  “I’m hungry,” the boy said.

Nino grinned and grinned some more as he closed his stubby fingers around the boy’s longer ones. “Well Hungry..” he said, grinning. “Do you happen to have a nickname? Or is that your surname?”

The hungry, puffy-cheeked boy stared at him and Nino didn’t stop himself from poking the other boy’s cheek then dragged him along.

“Come on hungry, our house is just over there,  we can play video games there and I’m sure my Mom had something hidden in there for us to eat..”

Dragging the hungry, puffy-cheeked boy in his hand, Nino smiled to himself and thought that the day wasn’t that bad for he had actually gained a new friend.
