Summary : He was prepared to marry her, but something had to happen just when he's decided to spend the rest of his life with her; he fell in love... not with her, but with her best friend.
OHNO
“Hello? Yes, yes,” he answered, still mostly groggy to be properly coherent as he tugged his phone away from his ears and stared at it as if it would soon eat him alive. He sighed when his girlfriend’s whine started to sound like she was about to cry, and sighed some more because he never thought she would be this unbearable. “Yes, I’ll be there in about – no, I didn’t fell asleep, no, no… yes, I’m on my way now…” he added, keeping his voice soft and apologetic even though he was itching to yell at her for being such a nag.
Well, he did fell asleep actually, but that was only because she had insisted he stayed late last night just to help her choose which wedding gown design (out of about a thousand, not including those she had collected online) would suit her best. He’d chosen something that was probably too simple for her taste, because the minute he had pointed at the particular design that caught his attention, she had immediately wrinkled her nose and called him an unfashionable old geek.
He’d pouted quietly, but that didn’t even resulted to anything other than a mere kiss on the cheek and a few minutes of snuggling, which would have been good enough if she had at least given him her usual ‘I’m going down on you, so shut up!’ performance, but she clearly wasn’t in the mood for anything kinky that moment and just resolved on heartlessly kicking him out of her apartment a little after midnight.
“I’m not spacing out, June, I’m telling you, I was actually going to take the train but I was afraid I wouldn’t get there on time, so I thought I’d take the cab instead; but it’s so hard to get a taxi at this hour and – what?! Of course not, I’m not – wait, what did you say?” he counted to ten, massaging his temple as June’s obviously annoyed tone graced his ears once again, only stopping when a voice added itself on the conversation. The guy, obviously June’s friend, was telling his girlfriend to get a grip and could she please stop nagging at her boyfriend on the phone like that because it’s kind of annoying really; June let out a string of quiet curses and he heard the guy’s high-pitched laugh before June went back to chastising him.
“I’ll be there in about half an hour, June,” he replied with a deep sigh and shaking his head when his girlfriend threatened to feed him with his own nuts if he wasn’t in her apartment at exactly thirty minutes after, then closed the phone on his face with a mumbled curse.
He shook his head again and doubled his steps.
MATSUMOTO
She flipped her elegantly-styled hair behind her ears, ignoring her best friend’s awfully familiar eye roll in favor of re-arranging her grip on her phone, white teeth biting on her lower lip in an attempt to keep her anger reined in.
“Don’t tell me you went out fishing again? Didn’t I tell you not to – oh you didn’t? Then why are you late? I’m sure you just woke up – no, I’m sure! You were asleep, and if I didn’t call you, we’d end up waiting for nothing!”
She inhaled deeply and waited for her anger to subside, most especially when she felt her best friend’s hand over her shoulder, patting her soothingly.
“Satoshi, will you please stop spacing out?! You’re annoying the hell out of me and we’re not even – where the hell are you anyway? Didn’t I tell you not to –“
“Hey, hey, calm down, will you?” Nino announced all of a sudden, and a glass of water mysteriously appearing in front of her face before her phone was suddenly taken out of her hand; “Stop nagging at him on the phone, my god, what are you, his mother? Drink that water and breathe in some air, Matsumoto-san, jeez;”
June pulled a face at him and drank, and then quickly snatching the phone at the same time she pressed the glass back onto Nino’s hands.
“Satoshi, be here at exactly thirty minutes or I swear to god, I’m gonna cut your balls off and spoon-feed it to you – and don’t laugh because I’m not fucking kidding!”
Her fingers were shaking by the time she flipped her phone closed, remembering the ways she had patiently rehearsed just to keep her emotions in check; but she had been in constant check with her emotions lately that she didn’t even know how to act naturally anymore, and her boyfriend’s increasing stupidity wasn’t making her feel any better.
It was his fault actually that she needed to unwind on her own, thus finding the enjoyment she didn’t think she ever had whenever she was with him. And then a few weeks back…
Something flashed through her eyes when the sudden images of the past week’s encounter with someone she barely even knew had her shuddering ever so slightly, closing her eyes at the memory of someone’s hands roaming across her bare body like she was being relearned through touch alone; the touches felt so different from her boyfriend’s touches, even better if she was going to be truly honest with herself because just the mere brush of those fingers had her shuddering in anticipation.
It had been weeks, but she could still feel the burning desire to feel those fingers on her again; wanted those lips against her own. She wanted to feel how it was like to be alive, the way those fingers had made her feel when they touched her, the way those lips made her want to scream and scream like she wanted nothing else.
She didn’t know she was unconsciously wetting her lips until Nino’s hand closed around her elbow, and her best friend’s face loomed over her own as if he was reading her very soul.
And with a move she knew she wasn’t supposed to make, she looked down and immediately betrayed herself, and felt more than heard Nino’s quiet hiss.
“Oh fuck, June, what the hell have you done this time?!”
Ninomiya
There it was again, the same look of panic he saw in her eyes when she mentioned her boyfriend’s name. He didn’t know what to make of it, and he was sure it had something to do with the fact that June wasn’t handling this thing very well.
He knew his best friend well enough to know when she’s scared; she had always been good at keeping her feet on the ground, planning her life ahead without so much difficulty. But this time, with her life facing a change that would be the turning point of all those she had carefully planned and built all throughout the years, he knew, without even asking her out loud that she was scared.
Scared that she was letting another person take over what was hers since the very beginning, afraid that he might not be the one who would compliment her at her best.
He watched her closely and tried thinking of the many ways he could help her figure out what should be done, now that he knew what the problem was. He was sure, and it didn’t take a genius to know what was bothering her.
He bet she was having second thoughts about continuing with the marriage, and now he knew exactly why her best friend had called him in.
It wasn’t to plan her wedding, not at all.
He was actually called to ruin it.
