One final look around his room, Ohno let himself out quietly. He clutched the painting against his chest, trying hard not to choke with the thought of running away from home just to be able to fulfill a promise. A promise he’s not even sure if he’s still supposed to keep. But only one thing’s for sure.. he’s doing this for Nino. And that practically answered every little doubt he had within himself.
He then tiptoed to his parent’s bedroom. He opened the door quietly and paid his parents one parting glance, bowing in apology and closes the door before him again silently.
“I’m so sorry Mom..” he muttered under his breath, resisting the urge to cry even though that’s what he felt like doing for the most part.
He had at least half an hour to reach the nearest station and four hours max to reach Tokyo. Ohno couldn’t help but let out a satisfied smile thinking of the possibility of seeing Nino in the flesh for the first time. Most especially now that Christmas is just around the corner. The painting should be the perfect gift for his Nino.
His Nino.
For the past few months, there was no denying that he had fell for the man. It was weird at first, but Ohno couldn’t possibly get him out of his mind and when he suddenly stopped writing back, he knew he had to find him. He had to do something just to make sure that Nino is okay. And the first thing to do is to come to him, even if it takes all of his courage and earning his mother’s wrath in the end by doing so.

Exactly one and a half hour after he had boarded the train, Ohno felt that overwhelming sense of fear.
He knew there was something really off. It was the first time he traveled alone and Ohno knew that that isn’t the reason why he had this strong feeling that something bad was about to happen. He looks around, still clutching the painting close to his chest and observing his fellow passengers with that wild look in his eyes. His chest started pounding hard and his palms started sweating profusely.
It was half past four in the morning and outside, it was still pitch dark. He couldn’t see a thing and he couldn’t even woke the other passenger’s up just because he happened to be freaking out about something he doesn’t even know what.
Exactly five minutes later, there was a loud crashing sound and Ohno felt himself being slammed hard on the window before everything went black around him.

“Y-You’re joking, r-right?”
There’s that same look on the older woman’s eyes again and Nino didn't know whether to believe everything he’d just heard or if it’s even remotely possible for those things to happen in such normal circumstances.
The onslaught of emotions hitting him from every side was just too hard to ignore. And Nino never knew he’d ever experienced freaking out and almost crying his guts out at the same time because of the intense pain he’s feeling at that very moment.
First, the Ohno he met two years ago was already dead.
Second, that the dates Ohno had written in those letters he had sent him were all true.
“I don’t know what you’re saying~”
“You are Ninomiya Kazunari right?” the older woman paused and stared at Nino pointedly. Nino nodded. “.. and you are that same boy who wrote these other letters too, right?” she added, pointing at the bunch of letters scattered on top of the coffee table. He nodded again. He saw Aiba motioning something at the corner of his eyes but Nino was too creep out to even care. “.. to tell you honestly Ninomiya-kun..” she said, her voice suddenly sounded very tired. “.. I don’t understand how that happened either..”
“B-But, but~”
“.. he died almost seventy years ago, Ninomiya-kun..” she said, cutting his words off. “.. the train he boarded that same day met an accident and my brother was one of the many who didn’t make it.”
Nino was obviously shaking to his toes, not knowing how to believe the things he just discovered. The man holding the older woman tightly on the shoulder kept a steady glance on Nino’s face, his eyes intensely curious.
Nino grabbed the painting and unwrapped it in front of them, his hands trembling. “This! This was sent to me a few days ago.. and this was from him.. he promised to give this painting to me on my birthday.. h-how.. w-why..”
The older woman shook her head understandingly. “I can’t answer that, dear..” she said. “.. I saw that painting once before, and when I asked him, he said that it’s a gift for his friend’s birthday.. we didn’t know about the things you two talked about but I was pretty sure my brother was always happy when he received letters from you. The minute you stopped writing back, that’s when he started thinking of visiting you. But our mother firmly refused it. The day it happened, Satoshi left home without telling any of us.. leaving us only a letter saying that he’s going to meet you..” she paused and handed Nino that same letter she was talking about. Then she smiled blithely. “..about that painting.. maybe, he just made sure to fulfill that promise he made you before..”
“Nino-chan..”
Aiba’s throaty voice calls out for him and Nino couldn’t find the strength to reach out onto the taller man’s grip as he fell from his seat, his tears blinding him. Then he felt Aiba’s arms around him, wrapping him into a tight embrace as Nino started sobbing quietly against his friend’s chest.
“Aiba-chan..” he wailed painfully. “.. Satoshi’s gone.. he’s gone.. what am I going to do now?” Aiba stroked his back without a word and Nino felt his world crashing down on him every fucking second after that painful realization.

“W-We’re very sorry for the trouble..”
She waved his hand and smiled. Nino then noticed the young man standing just beside her, staring back at him quizzically. Nino bowed politely.
“..I’m sorry, I wasn’t able to get your son’s name?” Nino asked, throwing the man a knowing smile. Nino felt baffled because he didn’t even smile one bit while the older woman looked up at the man beside her fondly.
“Ah well, he’s actually my grandson..” she said.
Nino nodded, still feeling a bit mystified. He bowed again, holding out his hand.
“Nice to meet you Sir..” Nino said, a little smirk started tugging at the corners of his mouth with the way the man stared at him. “.. my name is Ninomiya Kazunari.. and that’s my friend, Aiba Masaki..”
The man proudly tilted his head and flashed him one of the most dashing lopsided grin he had ever seen in his entire life. Nino felt something inside him physically broke as he waited for the other man to say his name but when he didn’t, the older woman smiled shyly.
“.. forgive his manners, Ninomiya-kun.. he’s exactly like my younger brother..” she said, quite amused. “.. maybe that’s why his parents had named him Satoshi after all..”
“S-Satoshi?”
The man grinned as an answer.
Holy god.
